Concrete Today has asked Jerry Karlik to become a new columnist starting with the February 2008 issue. If you do not receive the magazine you can see the articles at their site www.concretetoday.com after a simple log on.
Florida Statuary and Molds has received the commission to produce 8 - eight foot high Statues that weigh 2000 pounds each. They are for a fountain in St. Louis Missouri. Due to the region and climate that they will be going to the concrete mix was personally designed by Raymond O. Fox of W. R. Grace the leader in concrete additives. Ray Fox also watched over each of the batches as they were made for the first two statues.
Once the specially designed molds were made and assembled they were poured by hand. They were allowed to set and cure for 3 days before being de-molded. Chasing and finishing the raw concrete was done on site. The final finish will be completed by the sculptor, Mark Aeling at M. G. A. Sculpture Studio here in St Petersburg. The statues will be installed on 3-foot high pedestals to become a total of 11-foot high.
Now that the project has been completed, the statues were delivered and installed by the Artist and Just in time to begin our latest project, the repair and reproduction of a 250 year old Italian terra cotta sculpture.
*****The Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, is over 100 years old. Their trademark fountain sculpture, made of terra cotta in 1755, in Italy, is over 250 years old. Due to the water running through the figure it has begun to deteriorate. We have received the commission to repair the original and to reproduce it for their other Columbia restaurants throughout the country.
